In 2024, the libraries of Pongro and Samaki Ekpheap Primary Schools in Chi Kraeng district underwent transformational renovations. These updates have significantly improved the learning environments, enhanced access to modern technology, and empowered teachers, students, and the broader community.
Key Highlights of the Library Renovations:
Modernized Facilities:
Indoor spaces were upgraded to be more child-friendly, modern, and welcoming, with new furniture and decorations, newly installed fans, secure electrical systems, and 3,000 new books.
Digital Transformation:
50 tablets equipped with online and offline learning applications were introduced, along with educational gaming materials and an offline-accessible library for Khmer books.
Teachers and students are now proficient in using the new technology.
Support and Training for Teachers:
25 teachers received development training to better utilize library resources and integrate apps like “Let’s Read” into their teaching methods.
Community Involvement:
Parents attended two workshops to better understand the value and use of the libraries, with an impressive 56% participation rate among all parents.
Significant Results:
- Library visits have increased significantly. For example, Samaki Ekpheap’s visits increased from just 1,430 student visitors per month to an incredible 5,721 students visiting monthly during scheduled and free time.
- Borrowing rates have risen exponentially, while teacher and community engagement has also seen notable growth.
Improved Learning Outcomes:
The pass rate at both schools improved significantly in the 2023–2024 academic year (even after just launching the renovated libraries), rising to 88% overall, up from 83% before the renovation. Additionally, dropout rates dropped from 10% to just 2%.
The libraries have become more than just places for learning – they are now hubs of joy, fun, engagement, and inspiration for the entire community. This project demonstrates how access to quality resources, modern tools, and dedicated teachers and librarians can truly transform education.
