For many children growing up in rural Cambodia, continuing their education beyond secondary school can be a challenge. Financial pressures, limited opportunities, and family responsibilities often stand in the way of achieving their dreams.
Sophanna knows this firsthand.

Born and raised in Chi Kraeng District, Sophanna was one of the first students selected for TGF’s scholarship program. In 2010, while studying in Grade 8, he received a three-year scholarship that helped cover school expenses and study materials, allowing him to continue his education and successfully complete secondary school.
For Sophanna, the scholarship represented more than financial support. It was an opportunity to continue learning and pursue goals that may otherwise have been out of reach.
After graduating from Grade 12, Sophanna remained determined to continue his studies. In 2015, an opportunity arose that would change his life once again.
Through TGF’s continued engagement with former scholarship students, Sophanna learned about an opening within the organization and joined TGF as a Children’s Education Program (CEP) Assistant. The Program focuses on strengthening early childhood education and supporting young learners across Chi Kraeng District.
For Sophanna, the role offered more than employment. It provided the opportunity to give back to the communities where he was born and raised and to help create opportunities for other children facing challenges similar to those, he had experienced himself.

While working with TGF, Sophanna continued pursuing higher education. With ongoing encouragement and support from TGF, he successfully completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and later earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Planning and Management.
Today, more than a decade after joining the organization, Sophanna remains a valued member of the TGF team.
His work includes supporting TGF’s educational activities across the district, particularly in the areas of early childhood education, community kindergartens, school support activities, and scholarship programs. One of the parts of his work he values most is helping identify and support new scholarship students – young people who, just like him years ago, are hoping for the chance to continue their education and build a brighter future.

Reflecting on his journey, Sophanna shared:
“TGF did not just support my education. They gave me opportunities, confidence, and a future. Today, I am proud to be part of the same organization that once supported me. It is a privilege to help children and communities in Chi Kraeng and to support students who are working towards their own dreams.”
Sophanna’s story is a powerful reminder that the impact of education extends far beyond the classroom. A scholarship can help a student complete school. Continued support can help them pursue higher education. And sometimes, those same students return to help create opportunities for others.
Today, Sophanna is doing exactly that.
From one of TGF’s first scholarship students to a dedicated member of the TGF team, his journey demonstrates the long-term impact that education, opportunity, and community support can have on a person’s life.
We are proud of everything Sophanna has achieved and grateful for the dedication he continues to bring to the children, schools, and communities of Chi Kraeng District every day.
