Supplementary Classes Continue Supporting Slower Learners in Chi Kraeng District

TGF continues to support supplementary classes for primary school students in Chi Kraeng District who require additional learning support in Khmer and Mathematics.

Many students in rural schools face challenges keeping up with regular classroom learning due to interrupted education, limited learning support at home, overcrowded classrooms, or difficulties with basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills. Through supplementary classes, TGF aims to help slower learners strengthen their confidence, improve their basic competencies, and reduce the risk of dropping out of school.

In 2026, supplementary classes are being implemented across all TGF-supported primary schools, with an estimated total of around 5,500 extra teaching hours planned throughout the year.

Currently, a total of 303 students are participating in the program. The classes mainly focus on students in Grades 1 to 3 and provide a more personalised learning environment through small group teaching. Depending on the needs of the students and schools, class sizes usually range from 7 to 12 students, allowing teachers to provide more individual attention and support.

Importantly, 54 weak learners who already required supplementary classes last year are again participating in the program this year, highlighting the importance of continuous learning support and close follow-up for vulnerable students.

Classes are conducted outside normal school hours and focus on:

  • Basic Khmer reading and writing
  • Mathematics and problem-solving skills
  • Individual support for slower learners
  • Building confidence and encouraging active participation in learning

Teachers work closely with school directors, parents, and TGF staff to identify students most in need of additional support and regularly monitor their progress throughout the school year. Parents and school committees also continue playing an important role in supporting student attendance and learning progress.

Last year’s results already showed strong progress among participating students, with 79% of students significantly improving their learning outcomes and catching up with classmates through the additional support provided.

TGF believes that every child deserves the opportunity to learn at their own pace and receive the support needed to succeed in school. We are grateful to all teachers, schools, communities, and supporters who continue helping us improve education opportunities for children in rural Cambodia.
